Game Development Recap – 2014

I had a goal to work on a few game development projects in 2014, and I think I did more than succeed that goal. While I actually didn't ship anything due to a few issues that came up with my Apple developer account, I did release a few games on my website or at least create and submit some game jam games! Currently, my game project list this year sits at 10 games, in a mixture of major games I worked on/am currently working on, in various stages from being a major projects, to a game jam project, to a incomplete game concept. Let's check out the list and hope I can improve upon this list throughout 2015! Major Game Projects: Codename Cygnus on Android My current job is working part time at Reactive Studios on Codename Cygnus and a few other unannounced projects. This year we shipped Codename Cygnus…

Creating A Press Kit For Your Indie Game

Game development is only half the battle when it comes to creating a game. The other half is to create a strong presence online so journalists, media outlets and other press members can find and write about your games. To help with that, you should create a press kit for your game. What Is A Press Kit? A press kit is a collection of assets and information that allows the press to easily learn and write about your game. It contains all promotional material you want journalists to use in their coverage, and lets them know the facts about your product. The press kit will help journalists and media outlets save time researching information about your game that may be spread across the internet, and put it in one place for them to read. What To Include In A Press Kit A typical press kit will include all kinds of promotional assets and…

Spooky Ghosts – Spooky Game Jam

On the night before Halloween, I participated in the Spooky Game jam that the WPI Game Development Club hosted. The goal of the game jam was to create a spooky themed game in 6 hours. I gathered with a team of developers and artists from both my college and WPI and created a game we call Spooky Ghosts! Spooky Ghosts is a game that is a blend between Flappy Bird and Joust. In the game, you control one of the two ghosts and must collect as much candy as you can, either by knocking it out of the other player's basket, or collecting it as it spawns. I'm very proud at how well it turned out and how we scoped the game just right to finish everything from the music, art, sound, and code, just in time for the jam to end. It was one of the most successful game jam…

Bacon Duel (Bacon Pong) – Bacon Game Jam 8

This weekend I participated in the Bacon Game Jam, an unofficial Reddit community game jam, however it slowly is growing beyond just Reddit. For this year's Bacon Game Jam, the theme was "Millions of Them" and I decided to work with a friend on campus, Jacob Peltola, on the game. We both split the programming work, and he also did the art and sound effects. The game we made is Bacon Duel. Bacon Duel is a arcade styled game inspired by the classic game Pong. In the game, you are moving your bacon paddle up and down trying to block the incoming eggs and score them in your opponent's goal. Eggs spawn quickly, and can quickly crack and spew egg yolk everywhere! For the most part, the game is Pong with many balls (eggs) on screen at once. The game can get pretty exciting at times when there are eggs…

I Made A Game About Bacon – Sequel Incoming!

Many months ago I worked on a Bacon Game Jam project called Bacon Cannibalism. The game simply consists of you, the player, feeding raw bacon to a cartoon strip of bacon. When I originally heard of the Bacon Game Jam, I knew it was something I wanted to participate in, but did not have much free time the weekend it was taking place. However, I still wanted to make something. So I hurried over to my computer near the end of the game jam and put together Bacon Cannibalism. I did everything in this project including the art, which highly surprised me that I made "decent" art for a game. You can check out the "finished" product of Bacon Cannibalism here: http://mudry.me/games/BaconGameJam7/ I recently decided to revisit this very short game project the other night, and suddenly was inspired with a whole new way to eat bacon in a video game. This…

3 Hour Game Jam – Vocal Time

Last weekend, I helped coordinate and run the first ever 3 Hour Game Jam on campus here at college. When we kicked off the jam, we randomly picked the theme out of a virtual hat (a game jam theme website), and that theme happened to be "Bullet Time." Game Concept At first, when I originally showed up to the game jam, I planned on making a game that used some sort of microphone or audio input. I had already been experimenting with a plugin I found on the Unity Asset Store that accepted a microphone input, so I decided to use it! At first, I wanted to make a shooter using my guitar, which I brought with me. I was going to try and create a shooter using different notes on the guitar. Unfortunately, something happened with my guitar cord's audio drivers and it didn't work at the game jam.…

Lost In Space: Zero Gravity – Releasing Soon!

Hey everyone! I have some great news for those of you who have been following my progress on my latest hobby project, Lost in Space. As of a few days ago, I wrapped up the core of the game, polished it up, and submitted it to Apple for App Store approval. This means that in just a few weeks the game will be available for you to play! Additionally, due to the name Lost In Space being taken on the App Store, I've had to make a small change to the name, and I decided to call it Lost In Space: Zero Gravity. I feel like that's a great name for the game. What is Lost In Space: Zero Gravity? Lost In Space: Zero Gravity is a very simple endless runner. In the game, you are simply an astronaut drifting out into the void that is space. You must dodge asteroids…
